back to the bus

Out of Africa (1985): having only seen one crappy robert redford movie before this year (the horse whisperer), i had know idea what an amazing actor he was. this movie is acting at its finest with some of the best locations i've ever seen. africa is so freaking amazing. and meryl streep's performance is so creepy with her danish accent. actors like these deserve every penny they receive. the story is long and not all that exciting, however i got all choked up during the last 5 minutes. movie is very similar to the english patient, but better. at times it'll be hard to sit still through the 3 hours, but its worth seeing.

Some Like It Hot (1959): holy hell marilyn monroe is hot! she plays her dumb blonde part to perfection, meaning she probably didn't have to really act at all. crazy this movie came out then because there is violence and drinking and guys in drag and some pretty revealing shots of marilyn. its a fun movie with a good plot and some funny lines/moments that stand the tests of time. i guess i'd have to say that its worth seeing, but just barely. both tony curtis and jack lemmon get annoying after about 10 minutes on screen, so luckily marilyn comes on right about then.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? (1967): i liked the fact that the movie centered on the events of a just a few hours of this family's life. problem is the movie wasn't long enough to really establish characters. everything happens a little too quick. since you don't know the characters all that well, the movie becomes a little too unpredictable. sidney poitier and spencer tracy were very good together. i don't know. this one is hard to judge. the idea is really good, especially for the period it came out in. in the end i was glad it was under 2 hours. i'd have to say don't see it. there are plenty of other movies about race that are well worth it. like Amistad or Friday.

Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989): what a weird movie. as far as Soderbergh goes, its better than Solaris, but worse than Erin Brokovich, which i also didn't like. now andie macdowell is a star in every way, but the movie is just too random. the ideas and plot points are just too out there to be interesting. i mean, a impotent guy who used to be all wild and crazy becomes a liar who gets off by videotaping chicks and asking them questions about sex who has come back for a girl, but not really come back for a girl cuz they never really say, and blah freaking blah. i'm sure some out there love this movie, but not i. andie is wonderful, but see groundhog's day instead. don't see this one.

so yeah, that's what i've been up to the last few days in case you were wondering. not doing homework or cleaning house. just watching movies. and oh yeah, for those that don't know, kim totaled the honda two days ago. she is bruised and bang up a bit, but is okay thank goodness. her poor little car is not however. so we'll be buying a new one as soon as we can. both her and mrs. chung wong fang that hit her got tickets cuz its was both their faults i guess. oh well, life goes on. mike is finally back!! it was so good to talk with him yesterday for a bit and see him. and the lynds-meister and i studied again for our dumb research class. i swear he is an idiot. and finally poor jess is sick i guess. wasn't feeling well a few days ago and ditched class yesterday. hope she's feeling better. i'm gonna possibly join 3 clubs at school. i think each for different reasons, but i'm not sure. before i reveal my top secret plans, i'll see how each goes first. i may not join any, so we'll see.
